So what do you get when you combine the world’s most popular sport with KakaoTalk and the stars of the hit Korean comedy show Running Man? Judging by the scene yesterday at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno stadium, the answer is 60,000 plus fans in pandemonium.

Kakao participated as the main sponsor for the 4th and final Asian Dream Cup, an annual charity football match held by Korean legend Park Ji Sung’s JS Foundation. Through the Asian Dream Cup, the JS foundation works to improve football infrastructure in Asia, with all proceeds from this year’s event going to provide educational and financial support for youth football players in Indonesia. As part of their efforts to thank loyal KakaoTalk users, Kakao gave away thousands of free tickets through on/offline events. Previous events were held in Malaysia, Thailand and China.
The match itself pitted Park’s KakaoTalk team, featuring international and Korean footballers and stars from the popular variety show Running Man, against the Indonesian All-Stars, and it would be a major understatement to say that the crowd was into the event. Whether cheering for their favorite stars, or singing along to performances by Judika and Crayon Pop, the stands were rocking with non-stop passion. While they definitely showed serious love for the Running Man stars, their heart was with the home team, who sent the crowd home happy with a 3-2 win.
At least for one night, Gelora Bung Karno stadium exhibited a level of passion that should rival anything we see at the upcoming World Cup, and the KakaoTalk Asian Dream Cup 2014 once again showed that nothing brings people together like sports.
