Kakao Co-CEO Sirgoo Lee discussed cooperation and creating shared value at the 2014 MWC

Kakao was delighted to have Co-Ceo Sirgoo Lee present at the second session of this year’s Mobile World Congress, the largest annual mobile congregation in the world, in Barcelona, Spain. Lee spoke in a session titled “Mobile, Disrupted; Challenging the State of Play.”

Lee spoke on the theme of “Disruption or Innovation?” by questioning whether disruption is, in fact, just innovation and change at its most effective. Throughout his presentation, Lee explained to the audience how the mobile industry is being innovated—rather than disrupted—by encouraging cooperation over competition.

Below are more key highlights from his speech:

Kakao believes that shared value created through collaboration and cooperation is what cultivates innovation. We decide against drawing a line between “You” and “I” or “users” and “partners” as separate, opposing parties. Thanks to the belief in a mobile ecosystem where multiple parties can benefit, Kakao was able to evolve into the world’s first mobile social platform.

  •   KakaoTalk has solidified its position as an indispensable app in Korea with more than 93% of the nation’s population engaged daily on the application. We achieved this by providing more than just messaging, but also by paying attention to user feedback in evolving KakaoTalk and its linked services. We are consistently working to expand the extent of content that can be shared between friends.

  •   Kakao plans to to diversify the content exchanged in our platform to mobile e-money. We are working closely with financial institutes in Korea to weave monetary exchange into Kakao’s platform. We hope to set up a new user-friendly and innovative service where friends can give and receive modest amounts of cash—just as how Kakao has enabled new ways of sharing games and music, and sending gifts to friends through KakaoTalk.

By continuing to ask “How do we create value?” instead of “What will we sell?” we believe we can create new value and promote collaboration for a better mobile future.
