Smaller Businesses Connect Better with Kakao YellowID

Today, the need for more connectivity is true for individuals, small and large businesses, and institutions of all sorts, across all industries. The challenge is: how can we connect in a better, smarter way?

For the past four years, Kakao has been on a mission to become a smart connector: a creator of smarter ways to connect not just individuals through various media (text, multimedia, games, music) but to also connect individuals with companies, organizations and even celebrities.

Kakao is excited to launch YellowID, a customer service, communication and management solution that is optimized for small and medium sized organizations. The service allows businesses to chat with their customers one-on-one, distribute mass messages, operate a mobile homepage and more via KakaoTalk. In essence, YellowID lets smaller businesses manage customers in the most efficient manner possible.

YellowID is expected to provide a breakthrough in customer communication for organizations and groups of all size and character; small and medium sized businesses such as restaurants, online retailers, beauty salons as well as non-profit groups such as schools, counseling centers, interest-based-clubs and support groups, or even individuals with a need for broad-level communication.

As KakaoTalk continues to be a main communication tool for 95% of Korea’s smartphone users, many smaller businesses have turned to using a KakaoTalk account for business purposes, and have been using it to actively communicate with their customers. Understanding this need, Kakao came up with YellowID to not just ease this process, but to enable these entrepreneurs to engage in active interaction with their consumers in a brand new way.

Let’s take a peek into YellowID and how non-mobile businesses can go mobile! (Note, we’ve created a hypothetical business “Kakao Guesthouse” as an example to showcase the functions of YellowID)

Kakao Guesthouse*, a cozy B&B located in the Pangyo area outside Seoul, opened a (free!) YellowID account to facilitate booking rooms. By building one YellowID admin page, (available both on desktop (web) and on mobile (app)), Kakao Guesthouse now provides 1:1 consultations, distributes mass promotional messages, and attracts more guests, all while offering a mobile homepage, free of cost.

 1:1 chat: “Do you have rooms available on the 18th?” “Where are you located?” “Can I see a picture of the room?” Kakao Guesthouse (KGH) receives hundreds of inquiries a day. When using a standard KakaoTalk account previously, the constant SMS and free calls were unmanageable. Now, with YellowID, KGH can keep live conversations going with hundreds of customers in one channel were hard to handle. With multiple administrators able to access the admin page simultaneously, YellowID makes inquiry response more than manageable. KGH also keeps a strict 10am – 7pm time window for inquiries so customers know when to ask questions, and when to wait.

 

 Mass messaging: KGH is planning two promotions this coming October. Through the admin page, KGH drafts a promotion message alerting past visitors of a 30% discount for revisits within a year of their last stay. For every twentieth visitor, KGH offers a surprise gift box as a reward, and the picture of the box is sent with the promo text to incentivize interest. With a few clicks, the promotional message is delivered to the 250 visitors who have registered the KGH account as a friend and YellowID messages are said to experience high opening rates.


 

 Minihome: KGH keeps a Minihome, like the profile page of a KakaoTalk user, but with advanced functionalities. KGH decorated and customized this page to include its information section and location info. It also has a News section, where KGH posts any promotions or general updates.

 Promote your account: Attracting subscribers (friends) can happen both online and offline. Kakao YellowID helps KGH attract friends by not just providing add-friend links and QR codes for offline promotional activities, but also allowing accounts to run friend recommendation campaign ads, which help attract new users from KakaoTalk.

 

 Admin Tool: The YellowID admin tool is how KGH keeps track of all chats and promotional messaging, manages its Minihome and friend recommendation campaigns. As an all-in-one admin tool, it is also where KGH can check its remaining balance, costs spent on mass messaging or promotions, and even recharge. It also offers a stats menu where KGH keeps track of latest user acquisitions, message open rates, Minihome visitors and more.

 

YellowID is free to create, and is only charged according to fee-based activities that occur through the account. 1:1 chat, Minihome customization and access to full functionalities of the admin tool are free, while a small fee is incurred for mass message distributions and account promotion ads.
