More privacy and control over chats is growing to be of greater importance for users that communicate regularly through chatting apps.
And we agree. You should have more control.
That is why today, we launched Secret Chat mode and Decline Invites features on KakaoTalk. Available upon update to the latest version of KakaoTalk (4.7.0 on Android, available today and 4.4.0 on iOS, to be update within a few days), these features will offer our users increased options on how communications are carried out – and with whom – hopefully resulting in a more satisfying chatting experience.
Secret Chat mode, which provides end-to-end encryption for enhanced privacy and confidentiality, is available in any 1:1 chat room (it will be applied to group chatrooms in early 2015).
Here's how you can begin chatting in Secret Chat mode!

All conversation that takes place in Secret Chat mode are safely protected by end-to-end encryption. In other words, all message content is locked behind an additional layer of secure encryption which occurs within the device before the message gets sent. (Image below)

This ensures that the message can only be read by the intended parties (or ‘ends’ hence the name end-to-end encryption).
All messages, including those in regular 1:1 chat, are encrypted along the entire network and are saved temporarily on our servers in encrypted form. (All messages are saved on our servers for 2~3 days to ensure sufficient time for the intended party to receive the message, even if their phone is turned off for a day, for example.)
KakaoTalk has always been extremely secure and we have not experienced any security breaches to date, but we decided it was time to take this a step further and give our users an additional privacy option.
Decline Invites feature is another update that offers users more privacy – though in a slightly different sense. It gives users the option to leave and decline any future invitations from a group chatroom. This way, users chats can remain more personal.
