Following the introduction of the Secret Chat mode last December, we're now expanding the option to group chatrooms.
Daum Kakao wants to provide a KakaoTalk experience that's as secure and private as possible, and the new Secret Group Chat brings us one step closer to that goal.
Users can begin a Secret Chat by clicking on the options menu on the top right-hand corner of chatrooms. Whether chatting 1:1 or with a group, all messages sent and received in KakaoTalk's Secret Chat mode are encrypted end-to-end, meaning all message content is secured behind an additional layer of encryption before the message is sent. This ensures that the message is read only by the intended recipient(s). Plus, once everyone in a group chatroom reads a message, it is automatically deleted from KakaoTalk’s server, remaining only on users’ smartphones.
Due to the enhanced security settings, Secret Group Chats are limited to 50 users per chatroom and certain features, including polling and scheduling, are not available. We hope to remove these restrictions in upcoming updates. Android users will be able to access the Secret Group Chat mode once they update to version 4.8.0, and an iOS update is expected within the month.
All of us at Daum Kakao have seen first hand what a great tool KakaoTalk is in helping people connect with each other. And we promise to do our best to keep KakaoTalk a safe and private environment where users can always share and communicate freely.
