Sitting is getting an increasingly bad rap these days—with some even purporting sitting to be as bad as smoking. The daily sitting we’re doing at work—recently clocked as 9.3 hours a day on average—has been linked to not only fatigue, weight gain and body aches but more serious problems caused by low activity such as cancer and heart disease.
So, what’s the good news for the thousands of desk-bound people? Companies and individuals are waking up to the alternative of standing desks, or desks that adjust their height to accommodate standing. In addition to promoting individual health, standing desks are also seen to increase productivity and focus perhaps due to the link between physical activity and mental alertness. Kakao is not late to the standing desk trend. Ten desks were first offered to employees by the Kakao People and Culture team back in 2012. However, the trend is surging within the company: 150 Kakao Krew now work at standing desks with more and more Krew putting in requests to make the switch.

The change has been an overwhelmingly positive one: “I first heard that standing desks were good for your back and body so I tried it out by making one myself, and it worked well. Other [Krew] saw me doing it and requested standing desks. I like it better than sitting all day. I think it’s made my back stronger and it’s better for concentrating—to change your posture once in a while, a few times a day.”
Trevor Kang, Kakao Krew
“After people started getting standing desks, they said it really improved their posture—but that wasn’t really surprising. The really surprising thing about using the standing desk was that I could naturally communicate better with coworkers. When I’m sitting, it’s more like I’m in my own zone. When we’re all standing, it breaks more walls and we’re more likely talk to each other and have better eye contact. I feel more active and I feel that I can engage better in my work.”
